Singer ALMA BENCZE was born in 1984 in Budapest, into a family of classical musicians. She took her first professional singing lesson relatively late at the age of 26 but this was a life-changing experience that led to her leaving her job and to her application to and acceptance at the Kodolányi János University’s Jazz department within 6 months. Soon she started performing in the clubs of Budapest with different bands and was invited to the Bucharest International Jazz Competition in 2010. In 2013 she formed her own band. It seemed that nothing could stop her but two childbirths did – for the time being. Before the birth of her second one last summer, she appeared at a charity concert where 27 of the  top line Hungarian singers took a turn each but her rendition of “Black Coffee” was the one that brought the house down and it became the talk of the town. She sings standards with extraordinary feeling and a style uniquely her own. She sent the demo below to the legendary 606 Club in London, although the owner, Steve Rubie had never heard of her but it resulted in an immediate invitation and, the girl out of nowhere, as far as the London audience was concerned had an incredibly triumphant debut. She’ll be accompanied by the brilliant pianist-keyboard player and bandleader, JÁNOS NAGY who is one of the handful of world-class jazz pianists in Hungary. Among other top acts, he leads the Free Style Chamber Orchestra and plays for European Mantra. In 1997 he was voted ’Best Soloist’ at the Getxo International Jazz Festival. In 1998 he won the coveted eMeRTon Prize as „Soloist of the Year”. In 2001 at the Mediawave Festival he accompanied David Murray where he earned high praise from the American tenor-sax idol and critics of Gramofon magazine named the concert Event of the Year. One of the stars of the new generation, ÁBEL DÉNES will be the bass player, while the young and extremely versatile drummer, FLORA JOUBERT has been playing with János for years now.
